The absence of menstruation in young women who have reached the age of 16. The diagnosis is also appropriate for girls of 14 that have not developed sexually. 95% of all women have their first menstrual period by the age of 15.
Causes of Amenorrhea, Primary
The cause of this condition is largely unknown. Possible causes are: delayed puberty, congenital abnormalities, such as absence or abnormal formation of female organs, intact hymen preventing menstrual flow, endocrine disorders, chromosome disorders, systemic diseases, severe nutritional or physical stress (anorexia or competitive sports).
Signs and Symptoms of Amenorrhea, Primary
No menstruation after puberty. The average age of menstruation is 12 years, 8 months. Most girls have started menstruating by 14.
