The cause of this condition is largely unknown. Possible causes are: delayed puberty, congenital abnormalities, such as absence or abnormal formation of female organs, intact hymen preventing menstrual flow, endocrine disorders, chromosome disorders, systemic diseases, severe nutritional or physical stress (anorexia or competitive sports).

No menstruation after puberty. The average age of menstruation is 12 years, 8 months. Most girls have started menstruating by 14.
