Tumors of the small intestine are rare and often produce non-specific symptoms. About a quarter of benign small intestine tumors are polypoid adenomas. Occasionally, however, it can be associated with cancer. Multiple polypoid tumors that occur throughout the small intestine are seen in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Occasionally, they can even have these tumors in the stomach and colon. These polyps are not very likely to become malignant.

Causes of Peutz-jeghers Syndrome

Familial cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome are genetically transmitted through families. Sporadic cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome develop in the absence of a family history of this disorder. One half of children of those afflicted with this disorder will inherit it. There is no racial or gender predisposition.

Signs and Symptoms of Peutz-jeghers Syndrome

As stated, the symptoms are usually non-specific. They may produce repeated episodes of crampy abdominal pain. There may be a history of small bowel obstruction without any specific cause identified. And, lastly, there may be a history of chronic gastrointestinal bleeding without a specific source identified.
