Optic nerve gliomas are caused by tumorous growth of astrocytes in the optic nerves or optic chiasm.

Dimness of vision and gradual constriction of the visual fields are the most common features of this disorder. Another prominent feature tends to be bulging of the affected eyeball. Occasionally, there is excessive urination, excessive sleeping, and lack of secondary sexual varcharacteristics caused by dysfunction of the hypothalamus.
