Diseases that produce blistering of the skin are seen in children from inherited disorders and in adults from autoimmune disorders. The three main groups of blistering diseases that occur in adults include pemphygid, pemphigus and dermatitis herpetiformis. Pemphigus usually occurs in adults. It commonly produces blisters around the eyes and inside of the mouth. These blisters are fragile and may spontaneously rupture.

In all the forms of blistering disease seen in adults, the underlying cause appears to be the production of antibodies that are damaging to the skin.

Signs and Symptoms of Ocular Pemphygus

Pemphigus involving the orbital region produces blisters where the skin appears normal or slightly reddened. The blisters easily rupture, revealing raw skin. These areas may crust over and enlarge. Frequently, they first blisters are noted in the mouth, although they can occur almost anywhere on the body.
