Sufferers of restless leg syndrome have an irresistible urge to move their legs. It is provoked by abnormal sensations within the muscles of the legs. Most commonly, it occurs at night or shortly after lying down. Frequently, it leads to insomnia. Older people, particularly women, are most likely to be affected.
Causes of Restless Leg Syndrome
The exact cause of restless leg syndrome is unknown. It is postulated that low levels of dopamine in the brain may be implicated. A number of conditions, such as pregnancy, iron deficiency anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and kidney disease seem to have an increased frequency of the disorder. Hereditary factors, emotional stress, caffeine and nicotine may all contribute to the symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome
Unpleasant crawling sensations in the muscles of the calves, occasionally the thighs and arms, are the most common symptoms. Jerking movement of the legs and the irresistible urge to move to eliminate the odd sensations occurs. Insomnia, due to frequent awakening or difficulty falling asleep, can lead to daytime fatigue.
