Amenorrhea is the failure to menstruate. This can be primary, where no menstrual cycles have occurred, or secondary, where previous menstrual cycles have been present. Pregnancy is the most common cause of secondary amenorrhea. It is associated with breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting and malaise.

Causes of Pregnancy

Amemorrhea from pregnancy is caused by the hormones released by the tissues which form the surroundings of the embryo. They feedback on the pituitary gland and hypothalamus and prevent the normal hormonal cycles from occurring.

Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

A woman with a previously normal menstrual cycle stops bleeding. Associated with the absence of menstrual bleeding is breast swelling and tenderness. Nausea and vomiting may occur.
