Thyroglossal duct cysts are congenital remnants or tracts that should have disappeared during development of the fetus. The thyroglossal duct cyst retains an attachment to the tongue. Accordingly, this cysts tend to move upwards when the tongue is protruded from the mouth. These cysts may produce a lump in the middle of the neck. They may become infected, leading to the development of an abscess.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are development remnants. Their tracts and the cysts or abscesses that might form from them are the result of the failure of these structures to involute and disappear during fetal development.

Signs and Symptoms of Thyroglossal Duct Cyst

A lump is found in the midline of the front of the neck in thyroglossal duct cysts. It moves upwards as the tongue protrudes. Local pain, redness and swelling may occur if it becomes infected.
