Symptoms can develop in the throat and anterior neck from all of the
structures that are contained there. These include problems from the spine,
the esophagus, the trachea, the thyroid and parathyroid glands and the
blood vessels. Symptoms can also come from adjacent structures, such as
the heart and lungs and the mouth.
Whiplash injuries can involve the muscles in the front of the
neck. Herniated discs can produce pain in the front of the neck.
Esophagitis and cancer of the esophagus can produce pain and problems
swallowing. GERD can produce reflux of gastric contents into the
throat.
Goiter occurs with problems with metabolism involving the thyroid
gland. Thyroid cancer can be identified and treated with compounds
that take iodine to the thyroid cells. Grave's disease is caused
by the thyroid and causes the eyes to bulge out and the heart to beat
rapidly.
Heart attacks frequently have pain radiating in to the neck. Pneumonia
and pulmonary embolisms can lead to straining of the muscles of
the neck from inadequate oxygen.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, and syringomyelia and
produce problems with swallowing. Brain tumors and chiari malformation
can cause problems with swallowing.
